Juneteenth and Shavuot: Receiving the News

  • Congregation Mishkan Israel 785 Ridge Road Hamden, CT, 06517 United States (map)

Please join us for a special evening to commemorate when the Jews received the Torah and Juneteenth, when more than 250,000 enslaved black people in Texas finally received the news, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, that they had gained their freedom. Also known as Black Independence Day, Juneteenth is our newest Federal holiday, celebrated on June 19. This will be an opportunity to reflect on how these two events speak to us today.

Our speaker for the evening will be Representative Robyn Porter, who was instrumental in getting the State of CT to recognize Juneteenth as a state holiday during the past legislative session. She has also championed legislation that has provided fair wages and work spaces for Connecticut’s workers, reformed the state’s criminal justice system and increased protections for domestic violence victims.
