Join us for a special Shabbat service as we show our love to those fleeing persecution. During this service we will have an opportunity to say the mi shebeirach, a prayer of healing, read the kaddish list, and recite the mourner’s kaddish. If you wish to add additional names to the mi shebeirach or kaddish list, please email Sarah Legassey by 12pm on Friday.
CMI has a long history of showing love for and welcoming the stranger. In the 1980’s our community helped settle Russian refugee families and today we are a proud member of JCARR helping to establish homes and provide support for refugee families from around the world, including Syria and Iraq. We are also a proud Sanctuary Congregation and support immigration reform.
On March 4th we will join with hundreds of communities across the country to participate in HIAS’s Refugee Shabbat. Founded as the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society in 1881 to assist Jews fleeing pogroms in Russia and Eastern Europe, HIAS has touched the life of nearly every Jewish family in America and now welcomes all who have fled persecution.
HIAS’s mission is to rescue people whose lives are in danger for being who they are. They protect the most vulnerable refugees, helping them build new lives and reuniting them with their families in safety and freedom. They advocate for the protection of refugees and assure that displaced people are treated with the dignity they deserve. Guided by our Jewish values and history, they bring more than 139 years of expertise to our work with refugees.
Our Shabbat service will feature Aminah, originally from Syria and one of the families helped by JCARR. Since arriving in the US, Aminah has expanded her family, learned English, and pursued her love of cooking. She currently works as a lead chef at Sanctuary Kitchen where helps others achieve their dreams through food. Aminah will talk about her journey to New Haven and experience making this her home. Aminah will speak during services.
Join us in-person in our sanctuary, or you can join via Zoom for our regular Friday night Shabbat services with Rabbi Immerman and Cantor Giglio. Services begin at 6:00pm.
